Grow your own Black Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) mushrooms at home!
Fully colonized nutritionally supplemented hardwood sawdust growing blocks will fruit in the comfort of your home. Depending on your strategy and level of care, these blocks will typically yield 2 flushes over the course of several weeks. Under appropriate lighting, Black Oysters begin as a rich charcoal and mature into large fruits with deep brown caps.
Simple instructions can be found in our How Do I...? education section. IMPORTANT! Don't begin the fruiting process if there is still some uncolonized sawdust substrate visible (usually at the bottom). If the bag is pierced before the mycelium is fully established, it increases the chances of contamination. Just keep your block at room temperature and watch the mycelium take over the remaining substrate (it's pretty cool!).
